Our story

Two offices have looked after Hilton Head Island and Sun City since 1995. In 2006 Dr. Lawless, an Army veteran, came to the Lowcountry to carry them on, and the promise has stayed the same: you will be treated and respected as a person and a patient.

New to the area? Finding a dentist you are comfortable with is one of the hardest parts of settling in. We would like to make it an easy one.

The old About page carried the Lawless family album, so it is here too: a family portrait, a flag raised in Iraq, a holiday card and a day at the beach.

Four treatments, in brief.

Zoom! Whitening

In the office, in one visit. A light-activated gel typically takes teeth at least six to ten shades whiter, finished with a five-minute fluoride treatment.

White Fillings

Tooth-coloured composite, shaded to match your own teeth, instead of the dark amalgam that discolours them.

Porcelain Inlays & Onlays

A custom-made porcelain insert bonded into a larger cavity, where a filling would leave too little tooth. Stain resistant and made to last.

Root Canals

When decay, a crack or an injury reaches the nerve, root canal treatment is often the only way to save the tooth rather than lose it.

Implants & dentures

Eat what you like again.

Dental implants give replacement teeth a foundation that looks, feels and works like your own, so you can eat virtually anything and smile without thinking about it. They also preserve the bone and the shape of your face.

  • Zimmer dental implantsA small titanium post takes the place of the root and bonds with the jawbone over three to six months, then carries the new tooth.
  • Mini implants for loose denturesPlaced in one noninvasive visit with no recovery period, so a denture can often be fitted and anchored the same day.
  • Complete and partial denturesConventional, immediate or precision partials, and implant-supported where that suits you better.

Questions & answers

What people ask before they book.

When is each office open?

Our Google listings show Sun City Bluffton, 16 William Pope Drive, Suite 104, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Hilton Head Island, 222 Pembroke Drive, Suite 102, open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8am to 5pm. Please call to confirm before you visit. If we are not in the office, leave a message: we check messages through the day and return calls as soon as possible.

What do I do in a dental emergency?

Call 843-681-6200. After hours, call and listen for the emergency phone number. Dr. Lawless and the whole team will make every effort to accommodate a dental emergency as it arises, even after office hours.

Do you take my insurance?

Both offices are providers for Delta Dental, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and Humana. We cannot predict what your plan will cover for a particular procedure, because every plan varies by the contract it was sold under, so for coverage questions please contact your plan directly.

Can I use a coupon with my insurance?

No. The $25 initial exam coupon and the whitening special cannot be combined with other discounts or with insurance plans. Mention the coupon when you book.

Are dental x-rays safe?

We protect patients of all ages with a lead apron, draped over your shoulders to cover you from the neck to mid-thigh, and we take particular care to shield the areas most sensitive to x-rays.

I have a toothache. What could it be?

There are several possible causes, including an abscess, a sinus headache or a damaged tooth. Make an appointment for an evaluation rather than waiting to see if it settles.

How seriously do you take infection control?

Very. We practise strict infection control and use state-of-the-art sterilisation, including the sterilisation of all handpieces and instruments.
